A Zombie mode in any game is certainly an exciting proposition. More so, in a popular game like COD MW3, whose franchise has hundreds of thousands of fans. Ever since the announcement of the Zombies mode by the developers, fans have been eager to know more.

Today, I will cover confirmed developments and rumors about the Modern Warfare 3 Zombies mode.

What is Modern Warfare 3 Zombies mode?

According to the official CoD Official Blog Post, COD MW 3 will feature a Zombies mode where squads can team up to fight against zombies. The blog post does mention that the fight will be against hordes of zombies, which certainly means it will be full-fledged zombie gameplay rather than symbolic. Along with multiplayer gameplay, it has a storyline as well.

With Zombies mode confirmed, it is now time to look at other confirmations about this mode.

Modern Warfare 3 Zombies Confirmations so far

With all kinds of rumors surrounding the COD MW3 zombie mode, it's time to know what is confirmed.

1. Largest Map So Far

Along with Zombies mode being confirmed, another fact is the map will be the largest zombie map ever.

This means it will offer an experience larger than Black Ops and other games in the franchise. If the track-record of MW developers is anything to go by, it will be full of action.

2. Gameplay

The gameplay of any new mode can make or break it. Let me now go into the details of the gameplay.

The gameplay would be similar to the survival mode since the official blog post mentioned PvE (Player Versus Environment). That means players won't be able to don the role of zombies.

Another clue came from the information that players must navigate the map to complete the missions making the mode a cross between the traditional zombie gameplay and the DMZ mode of Warzone.

There is reasonable information released to believe that COD MW 3 will provide the ability to exfil if things seem to get out of hand. It is in stark diversion to most other zombie games, which seldom provide the option to remove yourself from the situation. Even after that, if the player succumbs to the zombies, it is likely that they would get a few perks, but anyone familiar with COD gameplay will realize that exfilling is a much better option as it helps you stay alive.

There are clues from social media that players engaging in this mode can use Zombies field upgrades. However, this is still a gray area as very little information is available about the same.

3. Zombies Story

As mentioned above, there is a zombie story as well. The zombie map in COD MW3 is part of Operation Deadbolt.

The story revolves around Terminus Outcomes, a mercenary group that steals the last remaining Aetherium. While the group plans to weaponize it, your job as part of Operation Deadbolt is to stop them.

As Terminus Outcomes attempts to escape, they trigger the spread of zombies and infect the entire map. You will have to then deal with the zombies and complete the mission. This information was divulged by the same person who made the above tweet. For those of you who are unaware, he is a prominent COD YouTuber.

The point being, the source of this information is reasonably trustworthy.

4. Multiplayer Squads

COD MW3 will allow four squads of 6 players each. A total of 24 players and hordes of zombies make it similar to the zombie outbreak of the Black Ops Cold War, though at a bigger scale. However, the gameplay is more than survival since players will have to complete objectives, and only then can they move to the next area.

If one were to go by Outbreak Zombies, there would be boss battles in the COD MW3 Zombies mode. If that becomes part of the gameplay, the resultant loot that the players get on killing the boss will be significant and unique. Until now, many are expecting the Dark Aether storyline to continue for COD MW3 Zombies, which means the mode will continue in the game's future version.

As for the squads, with 24 players, the boss battles will surely be interesting and bigger than ever. While the Cold War had a single Orda to fight against, with 24 players, it is expected that players might have to fight against multiple Ordas or maybe a single one, who is strong enough to give a challenge to 24 players.

That brings up another question: what about the easter eggs?

Treyarch is the developer who has used them prominently in the COD series. Since it is the same developer working on COD MW3 Zombies mode, chances are easter eggs might make an appearance in MW3 Zombies as well.

An easter egg for 24 players will surely be a mesmerizing sight.

With four squads, the zombie intensity is surely going to be higher than most games, and couple that with boss battles, and it is sure that Zombies mode isn't going to be a pushover.

5. Map Info

Regarding the zombies map, there are a few things we know so far:

  • It is going to be the biggest map yet in the franchise.

  • The map will likely contain some side quests that can keep things challenging and break the monotony of always killing zombies.

  • 6. Open World

COD MW3 zombies is sure going to offer open-world gameplay. Additionally, the map will have what are known as Open Combat Missions or OCMs.

Such missions offer you much more choices than just zombie slaying options. It is expected that players would be able to adopt a strategy they prefer, like playing in stealth mode with the lights-out approach or adopting a loud and reckless no care strategy.

Modern Warfare 3 Zombies Rumors and Leaks

Now that you know COD MW3 confirmations, it is time to look at the rumors.

    1. Zombies in Al Mazrah

    zombies al mazrah
The official COD MW 3 has shared an image of the zombies mode. The setting of the image looks very similar to Al Mazrah. For people unaware, Al Mazrah is a map in MW 2. The image shared by the developers also has some shop signs in Arabic. That further fueled the Al Mazrah rumors.

The problem is the map in the Zombies mode will be remastered at best and won’t be completely unique. Since developers have already announced that it will be the largest map, it might be repetitive. That might take some shine off from the COD MW3 Zombies mode. It's best to hold your horses regarding the zombies mode until we have more information about the map.

    2. Replacement of DMZ?

MW2 has a DMZ mode, which requires you to infiltrate the Al Mazrah map and complete objectives. With Al Mazrah's map likely to be the backdrop of the Zombies mode, there are rumors that DMZ mode might be eliminated from the game.

The reason for these rumors is that the map would need remastering to make it the largest, which means some aspects will be repeated. If the Al Mazrah map continues in DMZ mode as well, it will be repetitive. To avoid such repetition, it is likely that the developers would do away with DMZ.

    3. Free To Play

Most fans are eagerly awaiting the Zombies mode. However, fans are wondering if, similar to the multiplayer mode, Zombies mode will be free or not.

Most fans who are familiar with various games of the franchise and the strategy followed by the players expect that the game will be free to play, including the ability to import weapons and gear in this mode. Since DMZ is also free to play, it would be the perfect replacement for DMZ.

    4. Separate Beta

There has been murmur on social media that there will be a separate beta for the Zombies mode. The rumors started after a user named HeyImAlaix published a tweet, which clearly indicates that Zombies Beta is on the way.

With the announcement of Zombies Beta, there is a lot of excitement regarding its dates. It is widely expected that the Beta dates for Zombies mode will also be the same.

Therefore, more information is expected to be released regarding this beta in the next 3 to 4 weeks.

    5. Zombie Perks

Any new mode introduced to COD games raises the question of whether the perk system will be the same or revamped. Perks are important because they can come to the aid of the player till the player is alive in the game. Some perks can provide extra health, whereas others can help them reload faster, and so on.

In all likelihood, new perks will also appear in MW3 for the Zombies mode. Also, some perks are expected to be reintroduced from the zombie modes of other games of the same franchise. Some examples include:

  • Jugger-Nog

  • Speed Cola

  • Stamin-up

  • Again, this is all speculation up until now.

    6. Time Limit

With over 24 players allowed in the Zombies mode, chances are the matches in this mode can last hours. However, many fans expect the developers to put a time limit of 60 minutes to it. That will alter the classic zombie gameplay.

The rumor first arose from a Redditor named Kalinine, who disclosed a few features of the Zombies mode. According to the user, the Zombies mode will be a cross between DMZ and Outbreak. In the same post, the Redditor claimed that the matches will have a limit of 1 hour.

As always, take these rumors with a pinch of salt.

It is expected that the COD: Next event, which will be held in October, will reveal a lot more information about the maps and characters. Until then, it is almost confirmed that the experience will be similar to Warzone, with zombies added to the mix and an increased player count.
